I was lucky to be born in a city called Kin la belle in the DRC, Africa. My Italian American mother and Congolese father lived in the DRC for the first 2 years of my life. But growing up in Washington DC, then schooling and travelling abroad has made me a kind of global nomad -- a proud American, African, and Italian.
My work deals with memories connecting my story to that of others in this world. Using printmaking, watercolor, collage, and sewing, my work reflects a unique POV and it is my imprint in this world and my life pattern.
As a designer of clothes and home items I like to use African Wax to represent my African mind. I like to celebrate the beauty of Africa's abundance of art and culture. These designs are available on many items on hip hippos.
I also like to use my own artwork: woodcut prints, acquatints, stencils, collages, sewing, staining and printing. I have added some of these to hip hippos items too. And my art work will soon be available on a selection of cards, digitally printed posters, framed and unframed. Stay tuned . . .
Printmaking is an art.
The artistic process transfers images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screen printing. Monotype prints are not exact replicas but each print is a unique piece of art work.
A matrix is a template, and can be made of wood, metal, or glass. The design is created on the matrix by carving into its flat surface with either tools or chemicals. To print from a matrix requires the application of controlled pressure, most often achieved by using a printing press, which creates an even impression of the design when it is printed onto the paper or fabric. (More modern printmaking techniques, such as screen printing, do not require a press.)
Some printmakers press the image out by hand with a baren or spoon. The resulting print is often the mirror image of the original design on the matrix. Printmaking historically was a technique used to print books and pamphlets because it could quickly and easily print multiple impressions of the same design from a single matrix as opposed to the old method of the scribes, who wrote out all documents by hand. The Guttenberg Bible was one of the first and most famous printed books. It was the cutting edge technology of its time, spreading ideas and knowledge everywhere.
